ORAL PASTE
COMPOSITION
Abamectin 3.7mg
Praziquantel 46.2mg
Excipient qsp 1.0g
PHARMACEUTICAL PROPERTIES
The pharmaceutical properties of the EQUABAC product derive from those of its active ingredients:
- Abamectin or avermectin B1, is an antiparasitic of the avermectin family endowed with great activity on both internal and external parasites of domestic animals.
Abamectin is the most active moiety of all ivermectins. It acts on nematodes and arthropods through gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA). It causes its release by the presynaptic membrane and potentiates its binding to receptors located on the post-synaptic membrane.
At the recommended doses, abamectin is very well tolerated both in adults and in young people and can be used at all stages of gestation. However, abamectin is devoid of cestocidal activity. This often makes it necessary to combine it with anthelmintics with tenicidal activity.
- Praziquantel is a pyrazino-isoquinoline anthelmintic that is very active against tapeworms. Its action is exerted on both adult and immature forms. Pharmacologically, praziquantel exerts its action in different ways including in particular the induction of a paralyzing muscle contraction and the destruction of the cestode integument. It is rapidly absorbed by the digestive tract in all species.
Its metabolism is complete and rapid.
The two substances, abamectin and praziquantel, then exhibit perfect complementarity in their action spectra.
TARGET SPECIES
Equines (Horses).
INDICATIONS
EQUABAC oral paste for horses allows the treatment and control of gastrointestinal and pulmonary roundworms and cestodiases in equines. Its very broad spectrum of action makes it possible to fight against cestodiasis, gastrointestinal strongyloses (large and small strongyles), ascariasis, pinworm infections, gastric and cutaneous habronemosis, pulmonary strongyloses, onchocerciasis and gastrophilosis.
ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE EQUABAC oral
paste for horses is administered orally at a recommended dose of 1.08g (= 1ml) per 20kg body weight, which delivers 0.2mg/kg abamectin and 2.5mg/kg praziquantel.
The contents of this syringe can treat a horse of 600kg live weight. Each division of the injector represents a dose of 5.4g of paste sufficient to treat 100kg of body weight.
Before administration, adjust the syringe according to the calculated dose by positioning the ring on the plunger. The paste is administered orally by inserting the end of the syringe into the interdental space and depositing the required amount of paste at the base of the tongue. The horse's mouth should not contain food. Immediately after administration, raise the horse's head for a few seconds to ensure that the dose is swallowed.
CONTRAINDICATIONS AND INTERACTIONS
- Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or to any of the excipients and in foals less
than 5 months old.
- Do not use in dairy females whose milk or its derivatives are intended for consumption
human.
SIDE EFFECTS
In the cases of very important parasitism, the lysis of cestodes can cause in the treated horse transient colic of weak intensity and a softening of droppings.
SPECIAL WARNINGS
Care should be taken to avoid the following practices as they increase the risk of resistance development and may render treatment ineffective:
- Too frequent and repeated use of anthelmintics of the same class for a prolonged period.
- Under-dosing which may be linked to an under-estimation of body weight, incorrect administration of the product or a lack of calibration of the dosing device.
- In order to limit the excretion of the product and its metabolites on the pasture, the horses must be left in the box for two days following the treatment
PRECAUTIONS FOR USE
Precautions for use in animals:
- It is important for the veterinarian to continue the progress after treatment to ensure that the infestation is eliminated completely.
- The product may cause dizziness and drowsiness in animals or make them less active than usual.
- Side effects are likely to occur more often after a single dose in an animal with a high parasite load.
- The product is slightly irritating to the eyes and non-irritating to the skin.
Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the medicinal product:
- Wash hands after use.
- Avoid contact with the eyes as the product may cause eye irritation.
