PHARMACEUTICAL PROPERTIES
COLIXACINE is a combination of two major antibiotics in veterinary medicine: colistin and enrofloxacin. Colistin is an antibiotic in the polypeptide family with great activity against gram negative germs, especially colibacilli and salmonella. Its particular mode of action results in the disorganization of the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane by an effect similar to that of a detergent. This effect works on germs in multiplication as well as in resting state. This mode of action greatly reduces the emergence of resistance to this antibiotic. Colistin also works by inactivating bacterial endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides).
Colistin is very poorly absorbed from the digestive tract, which makes it very effective against gastrointestinal infections. Colistin is eliminated mainly in the active form via the kidneys (parenteral route) or fecal route (oral route). Colistin sulfate is also very soluble in water.
Enrofloxacin, an antibiotic from the fluoroquinolone group, has bactericidal effects against many pathogenic germs in the target species. It acts by inhibiting the replication of bacteria by acting on their DNA gyrase. It has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram negative bacteria and certain Gram-positive bacteria.
TARGET SPECIES
Poultry.
INDICATIONS
Infections with germs sensitive to the colistin-enrofloxacin association in the target species. COLIXACINE is especially indicated for the treatment of respiratory, systemic and intestinal infections caused by organisms sensitive to the colistin-enrofloxacin combination.
ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE
Oral use in drinking water at the dose of: Poultry: 1 ml / 10 kg bodyweight / day corresponding to 0.1 g of enrofloxacin and 1 MIU of colistin / 10 kg body fat, for 3 to 5 days consecutive. As an indication, COLIXACINE can be used at a rate of 1 L of solution / ton of drinking water.
